Population statistics from the UK censuses
Find statistics about the UK population including data on housing, health, migration and the labour market. We provide access to data for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales from the 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001 and 2011 UK censuses.
The data is published by Office of National Statistics (ONS), the National Records of Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
Over the coming months we will be adding more data extracted from our legacy systems (1971 to 2001 and 2011) so please check back if you haven't found what you are looking for. We will also be adding enhancements to this service over time, so to find out more and to help shape this service please visit our Impact and Innovation Lab.
We aim to free the data for better discovery and, in the spirit of frictionless data, make it easy to use the data for sharing and utilisation whether that’s in CSV, Excel, R, or Hadoop.
Our system uses Data Catalogue Vocabulary (DCAT) to describe our data, DCAT is an Resource Description Framework (RDF) vocabulary designed to facilitate interoperability between data catalogues published on the Web. By using DCAT to describe datasets in data catalogues, publishers increase discoverability and enable applications easily to consume metadata from multiple catalogues. It further enables decentralised publishing of catalogues and facilitates federated dataset search across sites. Aggregated DCAT metadata can serve as a manifest file to facilitate digital preservation.
